A Guide to Visiting the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa 2026

Ottawa in tulip season is one of the prettiest times of year to visit the city. If you’re coming for the Canadian Tulip Festival 2026, you can expect colourful displays, lively walking paths, and one of the most beautiful stretches of spring in the capital.

The 2026 festival runs from May 8 to May 18, with the main festival site centered around Commissioners Park at Dow’s Lake. This is where you’ll find the largest displays, festival features, and the strongest tulip-atmosphere if it’s your first time visiting.

At The Don Club, we usually tell guests the same thing: keep your day simple. Pick one main tulip area, leave time to walk, and don’t try to rush through the whole city in one afternoon. You’ll enjoy it much more that way.

When to Visit the 2026 Ottawa Tulip Festival

The festival runs for just over a week in May, and in most years that gives visitors a very good chance of seeing the tulips in bloom. Exact peak colour always depends on spring weather, but early-to-mid May is generally the best time to plan your trip. The festival is scheduled for May 8–18, 2026, and tulip displays across the capital typically bloom from late April into May. If you prefer a calmer visit, weekdays and earlier daytime hours are usually best. Weekends tend to feel busier, especially around the main photo spots and waterfront areas.

Where to See the Tulips in Ottawa

Commissioners Park

If you only visit one tulip location, make it Commissioners Park. This is the heart of the festival and the best place to see large scale tulip beds in one walkable area. The 2026 festival highlights include 300,000 blooms, more than 100 varieties of tulips, and features such as the Tulip Trail, Tulip Taxi, a self-guided tour, and festival market elements.

It is the easiest place to recommend because it gives you the full Ottawa tulip experience in one stop.

Major’s Hill Park

If you want tulips with a more classic Ottawa backdrop, Major’s Hill Park is a great choice. It gives you flower views with some of the city’s best-known landmarks nearby, and it works especially well if you want photos that feel distinctly “Ottawa.”

Rideau Canal Promenade

One of the nicest ways to enjoy tulip season is not just standing in one garden, but walking part of the Rideau Canal corridor while the city is in bloom. The canal and surrounding paths make the experience feel more relaxed and scenic, especially if the weather is good.

Tulips are planted across multiple capital sites each spring, not just at one park, so it is worth treating the festival as a citywide spring experience rather than only a single destination.

How to Get Around from The Don Club

One of the advantages of staying at The Don Club is that you do not need to drive to enjoy the festival.

Public Transit

The most useful station for the main festival site is Dow’s Lake Station. From there, it is an easy walk to Commissioners Park. When staying with us at The Don Club, you can take Line 1 (Tunney's Pasture) from Lyon Station to Tunney's Pasture, then take Line 2 (Limebank) from Tunney's Pasture to Dow's Lake which is where you will walk to Commissioner's Park.

If you are taking transit, we recommend checking live routes on the day of your visit in case schedules or transfer patterns shift.

By Bike

Cycling is another great option, especially if you want to see more than one tulip area in a day. Ottawa is easier to enjoy by bike in spring than many first-time visitors expect, and tulip season is a good time to take advantage of that. Racks are available throughout the park to lock up your bike Biking from The Don Club to Commissioners Park can take about 14 minutes.

Walking

If you enjoy walking, heading toward Commissioners Park on foot can be one of the nicest ways to experience the festival. You will see more of the city, and the day feels less rushed. From The Don Club, the walk toward the main tulip areas is very manageable for guests who enjoy exploring on foot and making a few stops along the way. It takes approximately a 30-40 minute walk from The Don Club to Commissioners Park.

Taxi or Ride-Sharing

For convenience, taxis and ride-share services Uber or Lyft can drop you off at the Dows Lake Roundabout.

Events to Attend at the Tulip Festival 2026

The Tulip Festival is easy to enjoy if you go in with the right expectations.

The Tulip Festival in Ottawa is more than just flowers it includes a variety of events that celebrate culture, history, and community. Some activities are free, while others are optional add-ons. For 2026, the festival is promoting experiences such as the self-guided tour, cultural performances, craft workshops, Tulip Trail, Tulip Taxi, and special programming throughout the event period.

If this is your first visit, the best plan is usually:
  • start at Commissioners Park
  • take your time
  • enjoy the canal area
  • and leave room for a meal afterward

Check the official festival website closer to the event for a detailed schedule.

What to Wear to the Tulip Festival

Ottawa in May can be beautiful, but it can also change quickly from warm sunshine to cool wind, especially near the water.
We usually suggest:
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • a light jacket
  • layers
  • sunglasses
  • and a bag small enough to carry comfortably for a few hours.
If your plan includes walking the canal, spending time at Commissioners Park, and staying out into the evening, layers make a big difference.

Where to Eat and Drink Near the Festival

The Dow’s Lake area and nearby central neighbourhoods like Little Italy give you plenty of options for lunch, coffee, or dinner after walking through the tulips. If you are staying with us at The Don Club, we are always happy to point you toward a nearby spot that fits the kind of outing you want, whether that means something casual, cozy, or a little more special. There will be areas around the festival with picnic benches that will also allow you to bring a lunch and drink to go.
